Remote Sensing

Because it is not possible to obtain a complete description of habitat conditions within a waterbody through direct observation, NSC relies on acoustic technology to provide data that complete the picture. A combination of real-time kinematic Global Positioning Systems (GPS) coupled to scientific grade sonar (vertical, sidescan) allows water depth and substrate to be mapped, and hydraulic conditions are measured using an acoustic Dopper current profiler (ADCP). On a larger scale, trends and changes in habitat over space and time can be identified through the examination of aerial photos and/or video, as well as satellite images collected using optical and microwave remote sensing platforms.
